The Dolomites are World Heritage of the UNESCO

The list of the World Heritage Sites of the UNESCO comprises 890 sights in 148 countries. 689 of them are cultural sites and 176 nature sites. On June 2009 14 new sites were added to the list, and among them were parts of the Dolomites. Uniqueness, beauty and historic genuineness are the main criteria that need to be fulfilled in order to be accepted on the list. Being a world nature heritage entails serious obligations as a detailed and convincing plan for the maintenance of the site must be handed in together with the description of its present condition. Should the demands not be met or should measures against it be taken, the award can
immediately be withdrawn again. The Dolomites are quite a problematic area. Despite its great beauty, the activeness of this unique area is limited and can’t take more than its share. Concepts are being developed of how to best guide the enormous streams of visitors.
